Kankakei Gorge
Unparalleled scenery carved by time and nature
One of the “three most spectacular gorges in Japan,” Kankakei Gorge has some of the best scenery in Setonaikai National Park.
Gaze on the beautiful Seto Inland Sea as it complements the gorge through the seasons, from the budding leaves of spring and the rich green of summer, to the fiery leaves of fall and the white snows of winter.
Do not miss the kigan kaiseki (strangely shaped stones) with their myriad forms or the incredible iwa-no-katamari (hardened stones), created through volcanic activity over 13 million years ago. The latter have geologically significant forms created through diastrophism, wind, and erosion.
When visiting, a good plan is to get off at Kountei bus stop, take the ropeway up through the clouds, and walk back down through the gorge. Many unique plants grow wild here, so enjoy the walk no matter the season.
Kankakei Gorge is especially famous for its fall foliage. Deep red Maple Leaf Cider, made from 100% maple leaf extract, is sold at the ropeway station on the summit. You can also enjoy island cuisine at the restaurant here too.
